The Volkswagen GTI & Golf GTI began with a bold idea: take the practical Golf and make it genuinely fun to drive. A small team inside Volkswagen developed the first GTI as a lightweight, sporty hatchback with sharper handling and a fuel-injected engine, bringing a dose of performance to an everyday car. When it went on sale in 1976, its quick, nimble character helped establish the “hot hatch” formula.
