The Volkswagen Touareg debuted in 2002 as the brand’s move into the premium SUV world. Its name honors the Tuareg people of the Sahara, evoking a spirit of exploration that matched the vehicle’s blend of long-distance comfort and serious off-road capability. Developed with a robust platform and available with advanced four-wheel-drive systems, the Touareg was designed to feel refined on the road while ready for tougher terrain.

The model’s adventurous reputation was reinforced by Volkswagen’s Race Touareg rally program, which won the Dakar Rally several times. Through its generations, the Touareg has continued to pair upscale comfort with engineering made for travel beyond the pavement, making it one of VW’s most ambitious SUVs.
