The Volkswagen Rabbit brought the Golf’s fresh, practical design to North America under a new name. Introduced in the mid-1970s, it offered a useful hatchback layout, compact dimensions, and front-wheel-drive handling, making it a modern alternative to the Beetle and an easy fit for everyday life. Its simple, upright shape also made the most of its interior space.
The Rabbit’s mix of economy, versatility, and European character helped it build a loyal following. Volkswagen briefly revived the Rabbit name in North America for the 2006 model year before returning to the Golf badge, but the original Rabbit remains a memorable chapter in VW history and a favorite among compact-car enthusiasts.
