The Volkswagen Golf arrived in 1974 with a fresh mission: replace the Beetle with a modern, practical small car. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, its clean, angular shape and useful hatchback layout marked a shift from the Beetle’s rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive design to a front-engine, front-wheel-drive format. The result was compact and easy to live with, yet roomy enough for everyday life.
The Golf’s story soon grew beyond practicality. The first GTI, launched in 1976, added lively performance to the hatchback formula and helped inspire generations of sporty compact cars.
